Stay steady, stay safe, and stay independent in the home you love.

Home should be the place where you feel most at ease. Yet some of the things that can trip us up are hiding in plain sight: a loose rug, a dim hallway, a cord across the floor, a step without a handrail. We walk past them every day until we stop seeing them. And falls are common: the CDC reports (opens in a new tab) that more than one out of four older people falls each year, but less than half tell their doctor.

That’s why I’m offering this free Home Safety Checklist from Therapeutic Connection. I’ve adapted it from the National Institute on Aging’s checklist, and it walks you room by room through the places where slips and trips can happen: throughout the home, floors, stairs, bathrooms, the kitchen, and outdoors.

Print it out, grab a pen, and take a slow walk through your own home, or a parent’s home, one room at a time. It’s a great thing to do with a family member, too. A fresh set of eyes often catches what we’ve gotten used to.

Your home is half the picture

A safer home is a wonderful start. The other half is you: your balance, your strength, and your reaction time. The good news is that all three are things you can work on, and the right exercise may help you feel steadier and more confident on your feet.

That’s exactly what my BalanceSteady fall-risk assessment & action plan is for. It’s a 60-minute, one-on-one session with me at Therapeutic Connection in Waikoloa Village. With over 35 years in Physical Therapy, I’ll look closely at your strength, flexibility, posture, gait, and balance, and you’ll leave with a written action plan made for you.
