Is Your Tech Use Hurting Your Neck? Understanding and Preventing "Tech Neck"
Our bodies aren’t used to this head-down posture for so many hours a day, and it’s hurting us!
We live in a world where everything is at our fingertips—literally. From texting to scrolling, our devices keep us connected, entertained, and informed. But there’s one downside that often sneaks up on us: Tech Neck.
When you tilt your head forward to check your phone, you're putting much more pressure on your neck than you realize. In a healthy upright position, your head weighs about 10–12 pounds. But for every 15 degrees you tilt forward, that weight increases dramatically—up to 60 pounds at a 60° tilt!
Imagine carrying a heavy backpack around your neck all day. That's the kind of hidden strain your spine feels with poor phone posture.
This added stress can lead to:
Neck and shoulder pain
Headaches
Stiffness and limited range of motion
Long-term spinal changes if not corrected
The good news? Small changes can protect your spine and help you feel better almost immediately.
✅ Hold your device higher. Instead of bending your neck, lift your phone closer to eye level.
✅ Move with your eyes, not your head. Keep your neck tall and simply look down with your eyes if needed.
✅ Use supports. Prop your arms on a pillow, table, or use a phone stand to reduce fatigue.
✅ Take regular breaks. Set reminders to stretch, reset your posture, and rest your neck.
Good posture isn’t just about looking more confident—it’s about protecting the delicate balance of your body for long-term health. Think of it this way: Would you rather feel like you're carrying a sack of stones on your shoulders, or float effortlessly like a bouquet of helium balloons?
